Pitiful Predicament

In act 1, scene 2, we first meet Petruchio, a money driven bachelor in seek of his wife. Hortensio greets his dear friends Petruchio and Grumio in Italian and they quarrel in a friendly manner over wether or not Petruchio told Grumio to knock the door or knock him. Petruchio reveals that his presence in Verona is due to his father, Antonio's death and now is in seek of wedding a girl for money. Hortensia questions his interest in women and makes it clear that he is only wedding for money. Petruchio and Hortensio construct a plan in which Petruchio will agree to marry Katherine and Hortensio will dress up as a tutor so he can be with Bianca.

Personally, I find it impossible to not feel bad for Katherine. She may be short tempered but having to live a life time always coming in second to her sister can you blame her?! She is flat out told how awful she is over and over and in her attempts to silence the insults, the men just spit back fire. The sympathy of the reader grows in this chapter even more in this chapter because they know that she's being married for the dowry and is viewed ad merely a beast her husband must tame for a reward. Bianca is lucky enough that her suitors actually want to marry her.
